Maname in Jaffna
The Centre for Performing Arts organised the staging of Dr. Ediriweera Sarachchandra's immortal play Maname in Jaffna. For the first time the Sarachchandra drama group led by Mrs. Lalitha Sarachchandra undertook the tour and two performances were held at Vembadi Girl's School while one was stayed at CPA's Open Air Theatre. This was the first time in many years that Sinhala artistes from the South had toured Jaffna and the event evoked nostalgic memories for the members of this group, whose founder had very close connections with Jaffna during his lifetime. Indeed he had a special love for the Tamil language and had lasting friendships with many Tamil people. A special ceremony was also held in Jaffna to mark the 88th birth anniversary of this eminent author and playwright of yesteryear. For the many theatre-conscious in Jaffna the opportunity to see it on stage was a fulfilment of great wish. For the many who do not understand or speak Sinhala, it was a revelation that language is indeed no barrier to human and humane understanding. It was an endorsement of CPA's deep commitment to peace through the creative arts. For the youth members of this drama group the journey was memorable. It
gave them a shattering insight into what an insensible war has done to a
land which their founder had loves so much. They resolved that as artistes
they should play their rightful roles in bringing about awareness,
understanding and healing in this wounded nation of ours. Dedicated in his quest to direct and act in a serialised teledrama, Ranjit Rubasinghe is extremely happy that his thirteen episode production Ruwan Sakmana has achieved top rating in dramas telecast on Swarnavahini. "This is my first production in this field and although I have no financial profit I am glad that all the hard work thrown into the production has resulted in recognition from viewers comments, Ranjit Rubasinghe when the Sunday Observer contacted him about this achievement. "I am indeed grateful to the maestro Dr. Lester James Peries for giving me the opportunity to acquire working experience in production.
I worked with him from 1986 attending to continuity details in filming and while on this job learnt all the important aspects of film directing, location choice and sets, make-up etc. associated with a production of a film. No one could have taught me the finer points better than Dr. Peries. He is a strict disciplinarian. With this firm and valuable foundation I ventured out to film 'Ruwan Sakmana'. I have also been interested in acting since my school days at Rahula College, Matara. I'm from Marambe, Akuressa but I chose Waikkal and Nuwara Eliya for most of my location shooting for this drama series." Ruwan Sakmana is a series that emotionally reaches out to the viewers.Realistic in its story-line it focusses on the vulnerability of young girls working in garment factories and how easily they are victimised by a smooth talking predator portrayed here by Rubasinghe. The female lead is played by Nimanthi Porage and with clever flashbacks the story takes a tragic twist. An effective debut production by Ranjit Rubasinghe, we hope with his
dedication he will reap success in the years ahead.
