Enthusiastic in their objective to give our music scene a different track for audience appreciation, the members of the newly formed Kontra band specialise in salsa - Latin rhythms, traditional Latin dance music, Latin pop and Latin jazz. This is a welcome change from the pop, rock, folk, rap that is being played by most of the bands in action today. The band comprises experienced musicians and their versatility is on a high. Pianist/keyboardist Kumar de Silva who leads the group provides vocals as well, Dulip Gnanakan is on bass guitar and vocals, Primal Liyanage plays guitar and sings too. There's the young musician Billy Fernando playing the trumpet, providing percussion and of course his singing gives a lot of thrust to the group. Rounding off the group is the vital musician for a Latin outfit and he is the experienced drummer Shiraaz Nooramith who chips in on the vocals, and enjoys himself immensely. A band playing only Latin music is something that was much needed in our music scene and Kontra band must be congratulated for getting together to give variety to the present music scene. In case you are wondering where do these guys hang out with their music, well they play at the popular Rhythm & Blues on Tuesdays and Thursdays weekly. Check them out this Tuesday and we are sure you will make many returns. "We decided to form Kontra band because we found many other bands playing similar kind of music - you know pop, rap, folk and rock and we thought well salsas, songos, sambas could be danced too as well. This I'm sure is going to be a new experience for not only the youth but also the older folk. We play pop songs in Latin like songs from Marc Anthony and Enrique and Santana and other pop songs that turn out to be exciting in a Latin base. We are thankful and fortunate that Russel Fernando himself a musician who understands this Latin concept, gave us the opportunity to express ourselves at his night club Rhythm & Blues says Kumar de Silva - keyboardist on whose shoulders lies the responsibility of making Kontra band tick with success. Catch their performance this week - it's a diary must. |
