Dancesport
championship 2002

Blackpool today is the Mecca of Ballroom dancing and everything to do with dance recognition is in Britain. Competitions run for one week and it is a familiar sight to see contestants partaking in the Blackpool championships, walking around with their costumes on" says Dharshan Wijesooriya, Director of Footwork.

"Our adjudicators at Dancesport 2002 Championship are Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace who have experienced the magic of Blackpool and are Ten-Dance Champions of the United Kingdom". So make a date on Sunday August 4 at 6.30 p.m. with Dancesport 2002 Championship here at the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Colombo. Students from five dance schools will vie for the trophies in both the Modern Ballroom and Latin American categories.

The students are from the schools of Naomi Rajaratnam's dance school, Elle Latino, Dance World, Ravi De Abrew's Dance Centre and the Strict Tempo Dance School. Novices, pre-amateurs and amateurs have thrown themselves into a tough, tight schedule of rehearsing the Waltz, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot, Tango or Jive, Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba and Pasa Doble.

This is the eighth in the series of successful championships organised by Footwork and on August 4 Simone and Flavia's scintillating exhibition performances in the two segments - five dances in the Ballroom and five dances of Latin American, is a must in your diary.

Dancesport could be an event in the 2008 Olympic Games and whether our students of dancing could complete at that level is debatable. "What we need is to improve our technique further for which we require more workshops and visits by foreign trainers". comments Dharshan Wijesooriya who has in the past two years been an adjudicator for ten international championships in the Asian region - Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan.

"It is necessary to train children even in schools. Ballet is considered good, but not ballroom and latin dancing which is officially recognised as a sport. In Korea children at a young age are taught the five dances in Ballroom and Latin and we in Sri Lanka should begin to do so". Hilton Colombo is the host hotel for the event and the other sponsors are Software, MTV/YES FM and Flowers of Summer.
