Othello in Jaffna

The Centre for Performing Arts, Jaffna staged Shakespeare's Othello at its open air theatre last month. This was its first attempt at staging an English play and it turned out to be a great success with an audience of more than 700 people in attendance. The project was initiated by a keen group of young dramatists who are striving to only review an interest in the classical plays but also to propagate the study of English Literature.

such endeavours help to affirm the position of English as a link language - a dimension that needs to be addressed in resolving the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. many members of the expatriate community were among the invitees and they admired the high standard of the performance and some had even commented that they never expected to see a Shakespeare drama in Jaffna during these difficult times.
