Hammer throw for women - the first event at Asian Athletic C'ships

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to grace the opening of the 14th Asian Athletic Championships on August 8 around 6 p.m. The opening ceremony will be a colourful sessions where the bands of three services - Army, Navy, Air Force together with the Police band and school bands will entertain the large gathering that is expected. The musical display will be from 4.30 p.m. to 5.45 p.m.

After the arrival of the Prime Minister, the Olympic Torch will be lit by the first Asian Gold Medallist Nagalingam Ethirveerasingham and Susanthika Jayasinghe who won the Bronze Medal for the 200 metres at the Sydney Olympic Games.

Then the flag hoisting ceremonies will take place after which the Prime Minister will address the gathering and the Games will be declared open. At around 8 p.m. that day, a cultural display by about 5,300 school children will take place.

Meanwhile as at Friday, there were 38 nations that have confirmed participation with 722 participants - 523 men and 199 women and the latest additions are: Malaysia 15, Bahrain 9, South Korea 2, Jordan 6, Hong Kong 10, Vietnam 2. On the remaining days, Nepal, Mongolia, Iraq and Saudi Arabia are expected to send their entries.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka team will be selected after the National Championships that will be held from July 25 to 28 on the Rekotan track at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The athletic events at the Asian Championships will be held from August 9 to 12 with the first event - the final of Hammer throw for women scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

It's 18 days to go for the championships. The AAA of Sri Lanka is making every effort to make this event a success.
