Colourful opening ceremony heralds Asian Athletic C'ships by LESLIE FERNANDO Maurice Nicholas, the Secretary General of the Asian Amateur Athletic Association who will be one of the members of the Directorial Organisation of the 14th Asian Athletic Championships to be held in Colombo from 8 to 12 August will be here on August 5. According to media spokesman of the Asian Athletic Championships, Maurice Nicholas will offer his assistance to the Organising Committee headed by Sunil Jayaweera, the President of the Amateur Athletic Association of Sri Lanka. Maurice, a well-known and popular figure in the athletic arena, will oversee the organisation part of the big meet. IAAF officials will also be here to inspect the newly laid Rekoltan track undertaken by the Australian firm. Students of Royal College and Visakha Vidyalaya will perform several displays at a colourful opening ceremony of the 14th Asian Athletic Championships on August 8. The first rehearsal will be held shortly and will continue to train for the show afterwards. The National Athletic Championships will definitely be held from August 25 to 28 at the Sugathadasa Stadium sans the leading athletes who will be participating at the Commonwealth Games from July 25 to August 5 in Manchester, England. More media personnel will be here to cover the Asian Athletic Championship where competitors from 43 nations will vie for honours. It's 18 days to go for the championships. The AAA of Sri Lanka is making every effort to make this event a success.
