Sri Lanka expects GOLD from Susanthika

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Sri Lanka are expected to win at least five medals, including one in Shooting, at the Commonwealth Games to be staged in Manchester, England from July 25 to August 4. The entire contingent is being sponsored by Dialog GSM, and most of them leave for Manchester on an Emirates flight tomorrow (Monday) morning.

Susanthika Jayasinghe carries Sri Lanka’s hopes for Gold at Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

The President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri Lanka, Hemasiri Fernando, said that Sri Lanka's hopes of medals are with the athletes with "ace" sprinter Susanthika Jayasinghe, who won a bronze at the last Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia expected to strike gold in Manchester. Fernando said that he hoped all competitors will fare well and discipline maintained throughout their stay in England.

The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Johnston Fernando said that despite the government facing financial problems in the last six months, sports has been given a priority. He said that all the competitors are ambassadors of the country and that tough penalties will be enforced if any competitor is found guilty of indiscipline.

Dialog GSM has been supporting the NOC and the Ministry of Sports in fielding national contingents at international events. In 1998, they sponsored the entire contingent for the Commonwealth Games, which they are doing this year too in addition of sponsoring the Sri Lanka contingent for the Asian Athletic Championship to be held in Colombo next month (August).

Chief Executive of Dialog GSM, Dr. Hans Wijesuriya, said that they were proud to be again associated with the Commonwealth Games and their close association with the NOC and Ministry of Sports. He further said that MTN Networks has spearheaded the mobile communication network in Sri Lanka over the past few years and that Dialog GSM comprises over 200 base stations, international roaming facilities in over 100 countries and a subscriber base in excess of 350,000 and that the ISO 9001 certified company is a fully owned subsidiary of Telecom Malaysia Bhd.
