Don’t lose faith in our cricketers - Chairman Amarasuriya by Pelham Juriansz ACL Cables, the latest sponsors to Sri Lankan cricket, have generously come forward to sponsor the Bangladesh tour, comprising of two Tests and three One-day Internationals. Speaking at the press conference at the SSC on the tour, the CEO of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL), Anura Tennekoon pointed out that it is indeed good for cricket that Sri Lanka has a new sponsor for cricket in ACL Cables. “Not many people have come forward to sponsor cricket at a time when the economic climate in the country is not so good. Although Bangladesh is an emerging country in the Test arena, we should not underestimate them, as they could spring a surprise or two. “We should give a chance to the younger players on both sides to prove their mettle. I know that the team had a bad time in England. Every team has its ups and downs. Our team had a minor set back and we should try to get back to the drawing board and see what went wrong and rectify it. This set back is only temporary and I believe that we will come out of it and I wish both teams the very best in the series” concluded the CEO. Chairman of the Interim Committee, Hemaka Amarasuriya, said that it is good to welcome a new sponsor and they are not new in terms of sponsorship though they have not sponsored a series as such. Hitherto, they have sponsored Percy Abeysekera, our ‘one man’ cheering squad. “We should not let the past performance in England taint our image and we as an Interim Committee have great faith in the team and the management and we should forget the fact that every team goes through a bad period and it is good that it happened to our team earlier rather than later. I believe that we could peak at the right time and that would be the World Cup which is the greatest event as far as the cricketing calendar is concerned. “Don’t write off the Bangladeshis. Let us remember that 20 years ago we were in the same position being new kids on the block, feeling our way around” Hemaka Amarasuriya said. Chairman of ACL Cables, Upali Madanayake, said that ACL cables pioneered the cable industry and now they are taking a step forward and forging ahead to greater heights by sponsoring the Bangladesh tour. The Coach of the Bangladesh side former Pakistan fast bowler Mohsin Kamal, said that Bangladesh are fledgelings in Test cricket and that they did not have much preparation in their country because of the bad weather. They had some good games against the “A” side and development squad and are looking forward to an interesting series. The ‘gates’ will be free in certain sections of the grounds as the organisers want as many people, especially schoolboys to watch the match. |
