Thushara - 50 not out today

by Pelham Juriansz

Scorers are often the forgotten lot. They work behind the scenes and hardly anyone talks about them or gets a look at them. Occasionally they appear on T.V. at a match and nobody seems to write about them.

Heading the list of scorers is thirty four year old BCCSL scorer Nawalage Thushara Cooray who will be scoring in his 50th Test today as the match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh begins at the P. Sara Stadium.

A Professional scorer, "Thushara", as he is well known to all his friends, began scoring back in 1987 for the Tests and counts 15 years of service in this capacity.

His most memorable stint of scoring was in the Test when Sri Lanka posted their highest total of 952 for 6 declared at the R. Premadasa Stadium, and he recalls how he scored in that match recording the highest partnership between Roshan Mahanama and Sanath Jayasuriya.

That match seemed to go on and on and the scorebook will never look quite the same after that!

As a youngster I remember scoring in the old scorebooks that I used to buy and it was fun indeed, but now scorebooks look complicated affairs indeed with all the number of balls scored and minutes recorded and there seem to be innumerable things to mark on it.

Having scored for NCC, Colts, SSC, Tamil Union and Wattala Anthonians Thushara was busy last week at the NCC grounds recording all the finer points of the Sri Lanka Development Board match with the Bangladeshis. Hailing from Kalubowila MV and St. John's Nugegoda, Thushara is credited with designing the present scorebook that is being used by the BCCSL, both for one- dayers and Tests.
