CH create upset - beat CR 17/8

by LAL GUNASEKERA

CH & FC pulled off the biggest upset of the season so far when they beat CR & FC by 17 points (2 goals, 1 penalty) to 8 (1 try, 1 penalty) in their "return" Caltex League Rugby Championship game at Maitland Crescent yesterday after CR led 8-3 at half time. CR won the first round game 19-14.

CH who had won only six of their first round games were never given an opportunity of beating the 'Red Shirts'. But they proved it wrong. They fought fiercely throughout. The forwards did pretty well looking fitter than usual. Even the 'outsides' kept a close watch on their opposite numbers.

CR on the other hand had lost only to Kandy Sports Club in the first round - this too only last week. They seemed as if they have yet to recover particularly fly half Roshan Peiris who gave a pathetic display - dropping the ball and messing things up. The 'outsides' were guilty of poor ball handling and the forwards too did not play upto expectations.

CH went ahead in the 20th minute through a 40 metre penalty left by Nalin Dissanayake but 13 minutes later CR forged ahead after the 'outsides' ran the ball judiciously for once with Asanga Rodrigo forming the overlap to score. Halimdeen missed the conversion (CR 5-3). Then came a simple 15 metre penalty by Halimdeen in the 37th minute for CR to take 'lemons' at 8-3.

After the "turn around" a dropped pass by a CR 'outside' saw CH's centre Saranga Jayakody making a good run and with the ball changing hands on numerous occasions, prop and skipper Cooray went over. Dissanayake made certain of the conversion (CH 10-8). This was in the 10th minute and three minutes later Dissanayake missed a 22 metre penalty left. In the 32nd minute CR's Roshan Peiris and replacement scrum half Bohoran 'messed' up and with CH retrieving possession of the ball ended with scrum half Milinda Jayasinghe falling over. Dissanayake once again obliged with the conversion (CH 17-8).

Amil Jayasinghe refereed.

There are three games scheduled for today. Havelocks play hosts to defending champions Kandy Sports Club at Havelock Park, Air Force take on Old Zahirians at Katunayake and Galle RFC hosts Navy at Galle. The last two matches are Plate matches.
