The first awards ceremony organised by the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries (CNCI) to honour industrial excellence, themed 'CNCI Achiever of Industrial Excellence', was held in Colombo recently. A total of 35 companies who have made a positive contribution to industry were honoured at this ceremony.

The highlight was the presentation of gold awards to a company in each SAARC country which had achieved industrial excellence; as well as honouring a company which has established itself in India.

The awards were given in the micro, small, medium and large categories. There were provincial and national winners in each category. Gold, silver and bronze awards were presented in addition to the merit awards. The chief guests on the occasion were Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy, Investment Promotion and Constitutional Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris and Minister of Industries Rohitha Bogollagama.

The panel of judges were Dr Bandula Perera, Gotabaya Dasanayaka, G. Gunewickreme, Sunil Wijesinha and Nihal Fonseka. The sponsors of the event were the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd., the Norwegian Embassy, CIC, SriLankan Airlines, Lanka Orix Factors Ltd., Gamma Pharmaceuticals (Pvt) Ltd., Ninehearts (Pvt) Ltd., Unicorns Clearing and Forwarding Ltd., TNT International Express and Ishara Traders.
