JSS submits petition over ICSL : Three vital alternatives against privatisation

by Seneviratne Kahatapitiya, Borelesgamuwa Group Correspondent

A petition signed by more than 2000 employees was handed over to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees recently by the office-bearers of the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Limited outlining three important alternatives against the privatisation of the corporation on the implementation of government policies.

Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya, Minister of Tourism Gamini Lokuge, Secretary of United National Party Senerath Kapukotuwa, Chairman Malik Samarawickrama, Sirinal de Mel, Palitha Athukorala, represented on behalf of the government while Secretary Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya of ICSL Jayasiri Kottegoda, President Hemanie Herath and Treasurer Lesley Perera, appeared on behalf of the petitioners.

The petitioners have averred in the petition not to privatise the ICSL and to take necessary steps to consider the following alternatives proposed by Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya of the corporation:-

The Government should either acquire the excess properties of the corporation or sell them; the Government should take over 90% of unadjusted deposits of all kinds of insurance; the Government should obtain a loan from the ICSL. According to these proposals in the petition, the government should take over the excess properties belonging to the corporation and sell them. It should take over 90% of all unadjusted insurance deposits.

A good number of shares owned by the corporation also be sold to the public at a profit on the reformation of the management. Finally, the government should obtain a loan of Rs. 50 million from the corporation every three months per year on a longterm basis in order to cover up the government budget.
