Protein at a low cost via soya meat

by Vimukthi Fernando

The monthly consumption of textured soya or vegetable products (commonly known as soya meat) in Sri Lanka amounts to 550 to 600 metric tons per month, it was revealed on Wednesday.

Soya meat is the only product with over 50% protein content, and therefore a low cost way of acquiring the daily protein requirement, said the Chief Executive Officer of Raigam Products, addressing the media, at a campaign to promote the nutritional values of soya beans themed 'Ran Guna Dena Soya' (soya which contains precious nutrition). The objective of the campaign is to promote soya consumption for its nutritional values instead of the cost effectiveness, he said.

The soya promotion campaign, headed by Raigam Products includes various awareness programs for the general public. The programs scheduled for schoolchildren include essay and art competitions and quizzes, he added.

Dr. Geetha Maddumage highlighting the disease control properties of soya beans, said while reducing the bad cholesterol or LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) in the blood stream, it could keep the HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) levels constant. Recent research had revealed that the consumption of 50 grams of soya meat per day for a period of one month lowers the blood cholesterol levels by 10 percent.

According to studies of the US National Cancer Institute, soya's cancer fighting agents reduces breast and prostrate cancer. The calcium content of soya leads to the arrest of oesteroposis. Furthermore, consumption of products such as soya milk and soya cheese as against products from cows milk reduces allergic reactions, she said.
