Samurdhi false claimants to be taken to task

Samurdhi Development Ministry is to take stern action against those who had obtained benefits from the project in a fraudulent manner.

According to Agriculture and Livestock and Samurdhi Development Minister S.B. Dissanayake, about 25 percent (around two million people) of our entire population need some kind of financial assistance for their survival. " We introduced the Samurdhi benefit scheme to assist them. But, we find that over 50 percent of the country's population receive assistance from the project. We will have to stop providing them assistance, once we have ascertained their cases", he said.

The Ministry has also taken steps to increase the money paid under the `Nena Nuwana' scholarship to school children. At present each child receives Rs. 250 under this scheme and they will get at the rate of Rs.300 a month.

The Ministry will increase allocation of funds for this scheme from Rs.eight million to Rs. 12 million from next year. The number of scholarships will also increased to 3000 from next year. (SSL)
