New Archbishop to be felicitated by parishioners The Kelaniya Catholic community along with their Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim brethren in the area will felicitate the new Archbishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis, when His Lordship pays his first visit to the birthplace today. The welcome ceremony will center around St. Anne's Church, Pilapitiya, Kelaniya, a church for which the Archbishop laid the foundation stone ten years ago. Today will also mark the feast of St. Anne, and the tenth anniversary of the church. Elaborate arrangements have been made by the parishioners of the area with the co-operation and assistance of public officials, representatives of local authorities and volunteers directed by Minister of Interior John Amaratunga to make the thrice significant occasion a success. According to Rev. Fr. Roshan Fernando, Parish Priest who is co-ordinating the events parishioners from St. Mary's Church, Peliyagoda, St. Anne's Church, Pilapitiya, St. Paul's Church, Waragoda and St. Theresa's Church, Kelaniya have organised the celebrations, to mark three significant events: the feast of St. Anne, Welcome of the new Archbishop and the 10th anniversary of the church. The new Archbishop will be received at the Ambagahawatte junction at Biyagama Road, Kelaniya at 7 a.m. and conducted in a procession with school bands and devotees to St. Anne's Church, Pilapitiya (along Biyagama Road). After a brief ceremonial meeting at the Church premises Archbishop will celebrate Mass. Ven. Dr. K. Mahinda Sangharakitha, Viharadhipathi of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya and members of the Maha Sangha, Cabinet Ministers, Speaker, Parliamentarians of Government and Opposition and representatives of local authorities are among those who would participate in the welcome ceremonies to honour the new Archbishop. |
