Imported lime under scrutiny

by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

Lime liquid, bottled or canned imported in bulk to Sri Lanka suspected to be harmful for human consumption will be banned. Due to strong protests by critics, the Government is very likely to bring in laws to curb future imports, if they were found to be of poor quality and which contain chemicals, used to retain high quality of paints.

A national policy on lime will be brought by the Agriculture and Livestock Ministry to meet the purpose. The monthly magazine of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock; "Aruna' revealed that law-quality citric acid was used by local producers of jam, cordial, lime juice, lemon soda and some other tinned or canned food items. The Ministry officials also warned that use of these harmful products has reasons for several health problems.

A top level official from the Ministry said that they had already discussed with the Ministry of Health to control importing these products into the country. "The proposed policy will restrict the usage of such bad quality lime juice by the local food item makers", he added.

The Agricultural Import, Research and Enterprise Development Unit of the Ministry assured that they are ready to provide best quality local lime juice for the needs of our customers. Instead of imported citric acid, the market will be handled by locally canned or tubbed citric acid in the near future.

The Ministry official also said that after initiating the project lime growers will not face any problems in selling their lime fruits.
