Wider foreign participation at INTRAD 2002 Delegations from the Netherlands, South Africa, Canada, Western Australia and the United Kingdom have confirmed their participation at the INTRAD 2002 Exhibition and Investor Forum which will be held from September 4 to 6 at the BMICH. The delegation from the Netherlands has shown an interest in apparels, textiles, cut flowers, gems and jewellery, handicraft and spices while the South African delegates have expressed interest in coconut-based products, activated carbon, rubber products, tea and machinery. The Canadian delegation will be looking for apparels, textiles, ayurvedic products, handicraft, coconut-based products, spices and tea. Most delegations are also interested in obtaining first-hand information on investment opportunities in Sri Lanka specially after the peace initiatives. Local companies producing apparels and textiles, ayurvedic herbal, health and beauty care products, ceramics and porcelain, coconut-based products, furniture and wood products, handicraft, toys, gift items, ornamental fish, rubber products, tea and machinery and services have already booked stalls and many of them have also registered for the Investor Forum, said a spokesman for the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka, the organiser of the event. The Investor Forum, where government policy makers are supposed to spell out their investment policy and the opportunities available for local and foreign investors, has already become popular among potential investors. The forum in three sessions will spell out details of the investment opportunities. Opportunities in infrastructure development such as airport, ports, highways and rail transport, development of the North East, water supply projects and urban development will be discussed at the first session. Session II of the forum will be devoted to the information and communication technology (ICT) sector where the national policy on ICT and the opportunities in information technology and telecommunication sector will be discussed. The last session on tourism will discuss Sri Lanka's tourism strategy, Sri Lanka's eco-tourism potential and herbal resorts. Each session will include a panel discussion where the panel comprises prominent government and private sector personnel. |
