Malaysia Airlines on expansion drive Malaysia Airlines (MAS), the official airline of Malaysia, commenced services linking Kuala Lumpur and Sri Lanka last week. The airline will fly twice weekly to Sri Lanka, its 60th destination. MAS will use a three class 294-seater Airbus A330-300 aircraft on the route. The airline's Senior General Manager (Sales Distribution and Marketing) Ahamad Fuard Dalan told the agents and media in Colombo that MAS is confident of the new government and its efforts to revive the economy. This is the first expansion programme of MAS in Sri Lanka after 20 years, he added. He said that MAS is reintroducing all its flights after the September 11 incident in New York and added that Asian growth has surpassed the expectations of the airline. "Therefore, we are expanding instead of consolidating," said Dalan. MAS Regional Manager (South Asia) Syed Abdillah Aziz said MAS is the 17th online carrier to Sri Lanka. It commenced flights to the island in 1984 on a code-sharing basis with Sri Lanka's national carrier, Airlanka. Today, MAS is a world class airline with a fleet of over 100 aircraft (including an Airbus fleet of A330-300s, Boeing 747-400s, B737s and the spacious B777 aircraft) and a network of more than 60 destinations across six continents. It has won several awards including the worldwide award for best cabin staff. Malaysian Airlines, with its twice weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur and Colombo, reciprocates the code-share understanding by providing capacity on its flights to SriLankan Airlines. Director (International Marketing) Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board M.M. Taaiyab made a presentation on the diversity of attractions to its visitors including hill resorts, theme parks, shopping and architecture. |
