Trincomalee gets ready for 'Yuga Dekma'

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

Grandiose plans have been made by the Industries Ministry to make 'Yuga Dekma', the international industrial exhibition to be held in Trincomalee, a success. Industries Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said the industrial exhibition will be held from August 16 to 20 at the Trincomalee esplanade.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to inaugurate the exhibition on August 16 while Indian IT guru, N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chairman Infosys Technologies Ltd. and widely known as Asia's Bill Gates, will be a special guest at the event.

Several companies have scheduled their launch ceremonies to coincide with the exhibition. These include Mitsui Cement Corporation, which will lay the foundation stone for a roller press mill, Prima Ceylon and the Trincomalee Port, where the new jetty will be opened by the Prime Minister. An investor forum will be held on August 18. This is the first time that such an event is taking place out of Colombo.

A large number of foreign investors are expected to participate at the 'Yuga Dekma' where 75 per cent of the stalls have been allocated to them. "We want to portray our industrial capacity to foreign investors," the Minister said.

Meanwhile, the infrastructure facilities of Trincomalee have been improved and the landscape changed with new buildings being put up to stage the event.

Minister Bogollagama said Trincomalee was earmarked for the event due to the availability of land and port facilities for the investors. Around 240 stalls and nine pavilions will be put up at the exhibition site spanning across 24 acres.

Special trains have been organised from Colombo to Trincomalee for the public to visit the exhibition while there will be daily flights from Colombo to China Bay during the exhibition.
