Gem and Jewellery Institute opens in Colombo The Gem and Jewellery Institute (GJI), a collaboration of the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Manufacturing Exporters Association and the Export Development Board (EDB), was opened in Colombo recently. Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion Prof. G.L. Peiris was the chief guest at the opening while US Ambassador in Sri Lanka Ashley Wills, Minister of Science and Technology Milinda Moragoda and Minister of Tertiary Education and Vocational Training Kabir Hashim were the guests of honour. The Institute will provide training of a high standard to the industry to achieve global competitiveness to enter niche markets. Courses will be conducted in the areas of jewellery manufacturing, gem cutting, gemmology and computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing. The training will cover advanced stone setting, gem identification, gemstone carving, colour grading, jewellery designing and finishing, consultancies at factory floor level and jewellery management. The GJI is expected to carry out most of the functions earlier done by the former Lapidary Training Centre of the EDB. Technical and financial assistance for the project has been provided by USAID, the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission, Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Manufacturing Exporters Association, National Gem and Jewellery Authority, Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute and the EDB. The founder members include eight companies from the private sector. |
