CID on trail of PA vehicles

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

The special team of CID sleuths detailed to track down State vehicles allocated to People's Alliance ministers and members of parliament prior to the last general elections, are yet to recover some vehicles as they could not be traced even after a lapse of six months, CID sources told the "Sunday Observer".

The allocation of vehicles to different ministries by the then government during the general election have been misappropriated by several PA Ministers and MPs by allowing their party supporters to use them for election work. A ministry vehicle allocated to a PA organiser in Deniyaya area by a PA minister could still not be traced as the organiser is missing from the area. In another instance a People's Alliance MP returned a State owned vehicle after being warned by the CID that he would be arrested if he failed to do so.

The former PA ministers and MPs are unable to locate some of these vehicles as their supporters could not be traced. Around 40 vehicles belonging to various departments and corporations are said to have been distributed among PA politicians for party propaganda work during the election. Earlier, a Central Province minister was questioned by the CID in this regard.
