SriLankan Airlines is the official carrier for the Asian Athletic Championships which kicked off on Thursday with the opening ceremony at the Sugathadasa Stadium. The airline has pumped in an estimated Rs. 2.5 million so that the international athletic meet will be able to go ahead without any hitch. The Asian Athletic Championships are also bigger than the Fifth SAF Games of 1991 which event too had the national carrier as the official airline.

"Despite the Asian Athletic Championships coinciding with a lucrative and peak August summer rush, SriLankan Airlines planned well ahead to cope with this increased passenger traffic given our existing capacity. As this is an important international event, we felt we had to come forward with sponsorship, says SriLankan's Manager Corporate Communications Victor Abeysekera.
