Army women top boxers - clinch Neiva Embuldeniya Trophy by PELHAM JURIANSZ Army with four wins out of six dominated the "Neiva Embuldeniya" Challenge Trophy women's championship boxing meet at the Royal College boxing ring yesterday. Slimline Boxing Club won two of the six bouts. This meet also served as selection trials for the World Championships to be held in Turkey in two months time. In the first final (Pin weight under 45.5 kgs) L. G. Chandrika of the Sri Lanka Army won the first bout by 31 points to 17 defeating T. N. Shiromala of Police in a robust three rounds of fighting. The second final (Light Flyweight under 48kgs) of the day was a home and home affair between Army's N. Bodhipakse and B. K. Sandya Manel also of Army which went the way of the girl in the red corner - N. Bodhipakse who won 16 points to 2. The bout of the evening was the fight (Flyweight under 51kgs) between Slimline's J. A. Nilmini Kumari and E. M. N. K. Ekanayake of Army which was hotly contested and narrowly went the way of Slimline Sports Club by 26 points to 22. A. G. W. Nilmini of Slimline won the next bout (Bantam Weight under 54kgs) due to the fact that her shots were far cleaner and she won by 25 points to 12 over Army's S. D. N. S. Karunaratna. The next two bouts were mere 'pushovers' for Army as M. M. M. Susanthi (Feather Weight Under 57 kgs) won her bout with D. D. K. N. Jayaratna (Veyangoda Boxing Club) as Jayaratna was outclassed and had two counts in one round and Susanthi was declared the winner. Jayaratna looked completely out of depth. The Light Welter Weight ended in yet another anti climax as P. K. Sumudu of Army beat T. H. R. Sriyangi of Police. The loser threw in the towel. |
