Squash the 'Le Kandyan' way

The Connaisance Group in collaboration with the Hotel Lanka Oberoi will hold its annual "Le Kandyan Open Squash Tournament" for the fourth successive year, which is conducted by the Sri Lanka Squash Federation.

After the Squash Courts in this luxury resort in Kandy were upgraded last year, it has been made into a "Ranking Tournament". Since its inception four years ago, this tournament has roused tremendous interest amongst the participants and spectators and has been drawing a record number of entries.

The tournament will be held at the Hotel Lanka Oberoi from August 17-22, and the Le Kandyan Hotel from August 23-25.

In the events will be the Mens Open, Mens Intermediate(Over 35), Boys & Girls -Under 15, 17 and 19 and the Plate event for losers in the 1st and 2nd rounds. The age will have to be as at August 24, the closing date for entries at 5 p.m. on Monday August 12, and the draw will be held on Wednesday, August 14 at 6 p.m. at the CCC. Speaking at the Press Conference at the Lanka Oberoi the Vice President of the Squash Federation, Oliver Guruge said that this tournament will be open to foreign participants, hopefully from next year, firstly to South Asians and then to the other countries.

A workshop will be held on Sunday August 25 at the Le Kandyan conducted by the Sri Lanka Squash Federation along with the Management of the "Le Kandyan's" will be for the benefit of the young" Boys and Girls" of the Kandy schools.

This workshop will be conducted by qualified coaches of the Sri Lanka Squash federation which will also include Ms. Yasmin Zarook and Lt. Col. Tissa Jayasuriya(Hony.Sec of the Federation).

Naveen Samarasinghe is expected be the top seed for the Men's and Kushani Daluwatte and Thehani Guruge ranked first and second in the Women's competition.

Oliver Guruge also mentioned the fact that 50 years ago badminton was in the same position that squash is in today and as a Federation they do not intend to take that much time to increase the popularity of squash and expand its horizons.
