Five killed in Japan crash as holiday rush starts TOKYO, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Five people, including a six-year-old boy, were killed and six others injured when a lorry ploughed into a row of stationary cars on a Japanese motorway crowded with summer holidaymakers on Saturday. Pictures broadcast by local television stations showed the burned-out remains of the truck, which caught fire on colliding with the other vehicles. The accident took place in the city of Suzuka, around 300 km (190 miles) southwest of Tokyo, early on Saturday morning. The driver of the truck has been arrested and local media said he has told police he was asleep at the wheel when the crash took place. Japan's roads will have traffic jams dozens of kilometres long this weekend as holidaymakers head for the countryside for their summer holidays, which generally coincide with the traditional festival of the dead celebrated next week. |
