Teacher union denies allegations by VC

The Ruhuna University Union of Senior Academics (RUUSA) in a press statement condemns the act of the Vice Chancellor in making false allegations against a teachers' union which has been properly instituted under the Trade Union Act. The RUUSA has been registered as a trade union in late 2001 and its membership is growing. The union has written a letter on 23/04/2002 to the Vice Chancellor asking for an appointment to discuss issues pertaining to certain injustices caused to its members and being silent for some lapses and irregularities in the university administration. 'After three months, the Vice Chancellor is now condemning the establishment of the union without responding to its request.

The allegations made against the union are all false, misleading and malicious.

The RUUSA has been branded as a politically motivated, unauthorized, undemocratic and pro-JVP union, which are baseless allegations directed against a union consisting of professors and senior lecturers of the university, who have joined hands to safeguard the rights of its membership and to ensure proper functioning of the university
