Old soldiers never die

by Pelham Juriansz

The Old Boys of five schools, and the "Cavaliers" (a team of past cricketers from different schools some of whom have played for Sri Lanka), were seen in action recently. Watching these over 40's perform was indeed an exhilarating experience as they havn't lost their old touch. The most eye-pleasing innings' came from Old Peterite and former Sri Lankan vice captain Roy Dias who was elegance personified with two good knocks of, rather curiously, undefeated 85 at the Peterite grounds.

Also in good nick was Amal Silva with 124 and in the Old Joes-Old Thomians match former Thomian skipper Ken de Alwis and old Thomians David Ponniah and G.D.V. Perera were in good form.

Old Josephian Rohan de S. Wijeyaratne, coming from a long line of de S. Wijeyaratne's bowled best for the Old Joes.

In the Old Saints quadrangular it was good to watch former Sri Lankan wicket keeper Mahes Gunatilleke in action behind the stumps and he will put a lot of schoolboy wicket keepers to shame with his slick 'keeping. Former Josephian skipper Dushan Soza has been in stunning form for the Old Josephians with two good innings against traditional rivals St. Peter's and the Old Thomians.

His big hitting has been a treat to watch. It has been the batsmen who have held sway and the bowlers have been put to the sword except for Rohan de S. Wijeyeratne of the Old Joes. It is also expected that the fielding has been below par as the over 40's find it difficult to swing the legs into action.

The "Cavaliers", a team comprising mostly of past Sri Lankan cricketers, like Jayantha Seneviratne, S.Ilangaratnam, Basil Perera, Bandula de Silva, Bandula Warnapura to name a few could give some of the other teams a good run for their money.

Another set of old boys are the relatively younger lot who participated in the 35th quadrangular between the four "Saint" schools, namely St. Anthony's, St. Benedicts, St. Joseph's, and St.Peter's.

The Old Joes defeated traditional rivals Old Peterites at the Benedictine grounds, Kotahena on that occasion.

Old Peterites' Mario Villavarayan's outstanding performances with both bat and ball was not sufficient to win the match for them when they folded up for 208 all out in reply to Old Joes 212, thus conceding a four run win to their traditional rivals.

Old Joes batting first totalled 212 all out in 46 overs with five good knocks from Dilhan Ramanayake(36), Manoj Prasanga (49), Charinda Fernando(28), Mark Fernando(44) and Prasan Liyanage(25). Mario Villavarayan bowled best for the Old Peterites capturing 4/43. In reply Old Peterites could only muster 208 after being in a winning position at 200 for 8 with plenty of overs to spare.

The adjudicator at the final S. Ilangaratnam choose Mario Villavarayan as the man of the final with best fielder Charindu Fernando for his outstanding catch to dismiss Mario Villavarayan which turned the game in the Old Joes favour. Best Batsman's award went to Indunil Anthony of Old Petes and best bowler to Sanjaya Rajapakse(Old Peterites).

Chief Guest was Neville Casie Chetty and Special Guest of Honour was the oldest living Benedictine captain Terrence Perera.
