Army - Clifford Cup boxing champs Sri Lanka Army boxers who had the advantage of being trained by the Cuban expert coach for a week won the Clifford Cup Boxing Championships held on 22nd, 23rd and 24th August at the Military Academy Gymnasium at Diyatalawa. This meet was organised by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Military Academy. Army amassed 34 points while last year's champions Slimline Sports Club of Pannala were placed second with 27 points. They received the runner-up trophy presented by Bandarawela Hotel. Police Sports Club was placed third with 19 points, Air Force and Navy were placed 4th with 16 points each. Army has won this championship for 12 years from 1989 to 2000. Last year, Army withdrew over a controversy at the weigh-in. W. M. R. Wekadapola of Police Sports Club was awarded late Captain H. K. Karunaratne Memorial Cup for being adjudged as the best boxer. He also received the best boxer's cup at Intermediate Boxing Meet held in late May. K. K. Jayasundera of Navy who lost to Wekadapola in the semi-finals on a very close 9:10 points decision, was adjudged as the best loser, for his gutty and polished performance. This meet also served as the selection trial to pick the training pool for the forthcoming Asian Games in Korea in September-October. The chief guest was Mr. Hemasiri Fernando, the President of the National Olympic Committee. |
