24 reported dead in Brazil plane crash Twenty-four people, including a member of the Brazilian Congress, were killed in a plane that crashed in northwestern Brazil late Friday, according to media reports citing police officials. The plane belonging to Rico Linhas Aereas with about 30 people on board went down shortly after take off from the airport in Rio Branco, close to Brazil's border with Peru and Bolivia, TV Globo reported. The member of Congress was identified as Ildefonco Cordeiro. At least six people could have survived the crash, according to the television channel. The plane, an Embraer Brasilia, crashed 1.5 kilometers (one mile) from the end of the runway of the airport in the northwestern state of Acre, amid heavy rainfall which rescue workers say could have been the cause of the crash, Globo said. One of its engines reportedly fell about 800 meters (half a mile) from the crash site. The aircraft was totally destroyed, according to the media reports. Local firefighters were at the scene of the crash, but the terrain made access difficult, according to the report. The flight originated in Cruzeiro do Sul, also in Acre state, and after stopping off in the state's capital city Rio Branco, the plane took off again late Friday from the international airport there. Neither local authorities nor the airline have so far made an official comment on the accident. |
