Australia explores investment opportunities

A ten member business delegation from the Western Australia Chamber of Commerce were in Sri Lanka last week to explore investment opportunities and also provide an awareness of the current scenario to businessman of Australia.

The mission leader Ian Whitaker said the positive developments made by Sri Lanka in achieving a peaceful solution to the ethnic problem, the improved investment climate after the UNF came to power have not been highlighted, instead we are used to seeing bad news about the country. "It has made investors of Australia think that Sri Lanka is not a good place to do business."

"We wanted to change the perception and brought a delegation to get first hand information of the ground situation in Sri Lanka and publicise the news to the business community to look at Sri Lanka in a positive manner."

It will provide the initial impetus to developing more bilateral trade between the two countries. In addition we also would like Australian companies to establish their manufacturing plants in Sri Lanka with a view to tapping the South Asian market using the benefits of the Free Trade Agreements signed by Sri Lanka with India and Pakistan, said Whitaker.

The liberalised economy, ideal location and the conducive investment environment are positive features to attract investments to sri lanka.

Speaking of potential exports to Australia he said 'since our country is a multi cultural society there is potential for export of food items but the consumer looks for competitive pricing and high quality which are musts. Therefore a person who wishes to export should visit Australia before commencing the operation.

At present there are no direct buyers for gems in western Australia. This is an area with much potential for Sri Lankan exporters'.

Managing Partner DF Crawley Associates and Honorary Counsel for Sri Lanka Frank Crawley said " I have been to Sri Lanka several times but the atmosphere in this instance is peaceful and encouraging."

Belden Australia Pty Ltd, hindle Buralli, Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd, Royston Diesel Sales Pty Ltd, Solahart Industries, Woodside Energy ltd, DF Crawley Associates , Department of Industry and Technology, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia were the companies represented in the delegation.
