Thambapani for 'island cuisine'

Those who have been to 'Thambapani' are talking about this ''hidden garden restaurant with that ethereal ambience' - located along Duplication Road- a place where you could even hear bird twitter.

What is also most welcome about this place, they say, is that the food served, is prepared in just the same way as at home - with great attention to detail - both by way of the unstinting use of ingredients and spices which are ground, pounded (no packeted stuff) and the laborious hours spent in simmering the curries to achieve that 'distinct flavour.'

The food is referred to as 'island cuisine' and prepared exactly the way the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslims and those influenced by the Portuguese, Dutch and British made their various dishes. Seafood is their speciality.

And what is remarkable is that there is no chef to run the show but it is managed by a woman - Romayne Wickremesinghe, who I am told has vast experience in this area.

The Thambapani has a Gallery too where artists could exhibit their works. And Romayne says they will be sponsoring the work of two artists Sanjeewa Kumara and Sanjeewani Kumari this month.

Their exhibition will be on from September 10 to 15.
