Ms. Lanka 2002 - Beauty for a Cause : A queen is crowned on a starry night

September dawned on a bright and beautiful setting for the contestants of Ms. Lanka day. On this quiet night, last Sunday with the calm waters of the Beira Lake lapping softly, beautiful girls stepped out from the Bishop's College auditorium, to vie for the crown.


Ms Lanka 2002 title holder - Thushari Tillekeratne flanked by 3rd runner-up Kumudini Perera, 2nd runner-up Freena Careem, 4th runner-up Gangu Haseem and 5th runner-up, Anusha Rajapaksha.

As the night matured, the contest blossomed and the results were heartening - Thushari Thilakaratne was crowned Ms. Lanka 2002, Freena Careem, 1st runner up, Kumudini Perera, 2nd runner up, Gangu Haseem 3rd runner up and Anusha Rajapaksa, 4th runner up.

Once selected to participate they were given the total look and spread up by the Technique International school of Hair Design and Beauty Therapy.

The others who won titles in this contest were Lasantha Nelum Kumari who became Ms. Catwalk, Yoland Uyanahewa, Ms. Congeniality and also Ms. Beautiful Smile, Freena Careem who became Thalgo Spa Queen, Sharon Jayawardana, Ms. Personality, Ms. Talent 1, Saumya Jayaweera and Ms. Talent 2, Thushari Thilakaratne, (the Ms. Lanka 2002 title holder) Ms. Photogenic title was won by Lasantha Nelum Kumari and Freena Careem was chosen Blue Leopard Queen. Ms. Body Beautiful was Thushari Tillekeratne and Ms. Beautiful Skin was Kumudini Perera, Ms. Crowning Glory was Asmiya Jayaweera and Ms. Elegance was bagged by Thushari Tillekeratne again.

Ms. Lanka 2002 is a different kind of beauty contest because its proceeds go towards a worthy cause - this time for the setting up of a development centre for women in Batticaloa, assisting the setting up of a daycare centre, teacher training centre, dressmaking classes, recreation room, a cookery and food preservation knowledge centre with cookers and saucepans and a first aid box and knowledge and know-how of first aid and home nursing. Thanks to Ms. Lanka 2002 pageant, which is the brainchild of Gwendoline Kuhatheva, Directress of Studies at the Technique International. The chief guest of this event was Minister Ravi Karunanayake and his wife, Mela Karunanayake and the guest of honour was Mrs. Bandu Wickremasinghe, director TNL.
