Tea exports earning on the increase

While the exports of 24.61 m/kgs for the month of July 2002 is 1.3 m/kgs or 5.96% higher when compared with the 23.2 m/kgs exported during July 2001 and it is due to the exports in bulk form. Bulk exports show a growth of 1.8 m/kgs or 11.81% when compared with the same period last year. Packeted tea exports show a decline of 0.73 m/kgs or 12.79% whilst exports of tea in bags shows a decline of 9.24% when compared with the same period last year. This has resulted an increase in export earning. During the month of July Rs. 277.7 million or 5.94% when compared with the same period last year. But export earnings from exports in packets show a decline of 6.86% whilst exports in bags record a decline of 11.69%. But the volume exported during Jan/July 2002 declines 2.6 m/kgs or 1.53%. The volume of 168.9% m/kgs exported during the period Jan./July 2002 shows a marginal decline of 2.6 m/kgs or 1.53% when compared with the 171.5 m/kgs exported in 2001. Barring exports in the form of bulk and other tea, all other categories recorded declines when compared with the same period last year. The most significant decline has been for the export of tea in packets which records a substantial decline of 6.7 million kgs. or 13.9%.

But the export earnings to date up Rs. 299 million or 0.82% for the said period, January/July. Earnings from exports in bulk records a growth of 2.99% whilst exports of tea in bags shows a growth of 7.18%. Export earnings of tea in packeted form shows a decline of 7.91%.

The average FOB unit value of exports for the period January/July 2002 shows a growth of Rs. 5.06 or 2.40%. It is interesting to note that despite volumes of exports in bulk form showing an increase, the average FOB unit price records a decline of Rs. 0.77 or 0.43% whilst value added form of exports such as tea in packets and bags records a growth of Rs. 14.29 or 6.96% and Rs. 12.63 or 2.70% respectively.

CIS continues to be the largest market for Ceylon teas. Exports to Iraq shows the largest growth of 58.9%. Exports to Syria and Tuinisia shows a significant growth of 20.95 and 25.45% respectively. Exports to Libya records a decline of almost 50%.
