World Children's Day on Oct. 01

World Children's Day falls on October first. It is a day of reckoning for children and adults to convey a message of concern, hope and inspiration. This year's theme being Children and Science... much emphasis has been laid to bring out the tantalising mix of potential benefits as well as unknown consequences. In the few years between infancy and adulthood, children are obliged to traverse a path that is both treacherous and exciting.

This year as in previous years an elaborate programme has been drawn to celebrate it in a fitting manner giving the pride of place to the children Sarvodaya Legal Services Movement has spared no pains to make it a memorable event. The Hon. President Madam Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and the Hon. Prime Minister Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe have both very kindly consented to participate at this function through the web cast which will cover the days proceedings.

The SLSM attempts to bring survival rights, empowerment rights and protection rights closer to the hearts and minds of children themselves as well as adults who are responsible for giving care, direction and guidance to them. The Child Rights Project is implemented at the village and district level.

An essay and lyric competition was held and it open to school age children island-wide under the theme "Scientific Discoveries and Protection of the Rights of the Children of Today and Children Yet to Be Born". Six hundred and twenty essays in Sinhala and Tamil were received.

A workshop with participants selected from those who did well at the essay competition was held with the objective of drafting a memorandum of the same theme.

Another novel exercise organised with great deal of planning and expense to make it a real experience for the children is the "Village to village trips of sharing happiness as a group of relatives". A group of child singers selected from all walks of life mainly the deprived, less affluent and differently abled, would traverse several parts of the country following the pattern of the Music Mobile that Ruth Pelham, Founder and Executive Director of Music Mobile Inc. New York, USA started.

The Music Mobile, Inc. New York, USA, was created by Ruth who is an educator, performer and song writer in 1977. In a colourful bus decorated with children's drawings, Music Mobile would travel to different parts of the country to foster cooperation, self-esteem, neighbourhood pride, and appreciation of multi-cultural diversity. Ruth has been kind enough to train the children and consented to join Music Mobile which starts on 9th instant.
