Church safe robbed Kollupitiya Police investigating into the theft of cash from a safe at the Methodist Church Headquarters at Kollupitiya, are in a quandary as to how several hundred thousands of rupees could simply vanish without any damage being caused to the safe, police sources told the "Sunday Observer". "We have reasons to believe that the theft was committed by somebody by using a duplicate key while the-Church parishioners were away in Kalmunai. It could probably be an inside job", police said. Although several persons were questioned in this regard, no one has been taken into custody so far. "The theft may have occurred somewhere between August 29 and September 2. We have no idea as how to the amount of money was stolen but foreign currency amounting to several hundred thousand too had been stolen, Police said. The theft was reported to Kollupitiya police by an accountant of the Methodist church. OIC Kollupitiya Chief Inspector A. Panamaldeniya and OIC (Crimes) Inspector Duminda Silva are investigating the theft. |
