Unprecedented crowd expected at Jana Bala Meheyuma

by E. Weerapperuma and Jayampathy Jayasinghe

Thousands of people will join the Jana Bala Meheyuma-(Peace Walk) organised by the United National Front with other political parties working as members of the UNF to express confidence, solidarity and strength by assembling at the city of Colombo, tomorrow September 9.

The UNP media spokesman Gayantha Karunatilleke, MP, told the Sunday Observer that the party had conducted 1,200 pocket meetings in the Western Province alone at UNP district Balamandala level and on electoral basis to educate the masses. "A number of pocket meetings were also held throughout the country during the past few days to educate the masses on the need to show their confidence in the United National Front Government since there were reactionaries who were trying to topple the government by undemocratic means and instigate the masses to revolt against the government which is making a bold bid to restore peace in the country ending the long outstanding ethnic conflict", he said.

"Tomorrow's peace walk is very much similar to the 'Jana Bala Meheyuma' we conducted while in the Opposition. People from the North, East, South and West will assemble at places they have been advised to be present on Monday at 2.00 p.m. and enter the city in procession. Sugathadasa Stadium and Tunmulla Junction are two of the starting points of the peace march". There will be a public meeting at one of the city stops, to be announced on Monday, he added.

The leader of Ceylon Workers Congress, Minister Arumugam Thondaman, said that he would bring in about 50,000 estate workers for the "Jana Bala Meheyuma", to show their strength to the government and its plan of action for a better future of the country.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister, A. H. M. Azwer, said that not only the member parties of the UNF but also the peace-loving people who value democracy, and others belonging to all religious and ethnic communities will also participate. The NGOs who cherish democracy have also expressed their unconditional support for peace and democracy and they too would be present.

Around 4,000 policemen will be mobilised to control in the crowd that will take part in the Jana Bala Meheyuma procession scheduled for tomorrow September 9, DIG Colombo Bodhi Liyanage told the Sunday Observer.

The DIG has appealed to school principals in Colombo to close schools early in view of the Jana Bala Meheyuma procession expected to commence around 12 noon.

Motorists too have been advised by the police to avoid routes like Reid Avenue, Borella, Orugodawatte, Mutuwal, and other parts of Colombo between 12 noon and 4 p.m. where large crowds are expected to take part.

Meanwhile around 200 bus load of participants are expected to arrive from Kandy.
