Bomb blast in Nepal causes minor damage

KATHMANDU, Sept 7 (AFP) - A bomb exploded early Saturday in a municipal office building near the Nepal capital Kathmandu but caused no casualties, a witness said.

The blast at Madhyapur, nine kilometres (5.6 miles) east of Kathmandu, damaged furniture and windows in the building, the witness said.

"The army has already cordoned off the area but no-one was injured or killed in the incident," the witness said. The blast occurred at around 4:00 am.

It was unclear who had planted the bomb but suspicion immediately fell on the Maoists rebels, blamed for a series of explosions in the Kathmandu valley since a 10-month-long state of emergency was lifted on August 28.

Almost every day since then there have been reports of blasts or security forces having to dispose of bombs.

The precarious security situation in the country has prompted the government to consider reimposing emergency rule, officials said.

The Maoist rebels have been fighting for a communist republic in Nepal since 1996 and the uprising has so far claimed more than 4,400 lives.
