PA, JVP apprehensive...

by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

People's Alliance and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna stalwarts have made apprehensive remarks on the commencement of the Thailand talks between the Government and the LTTE tomorrow (Sept. 16). PA Parliamentarian Nimal Siripala de Silva told the Sunday Observer that the PA is pleased with the commencement of talks though, it came too late.

He reminded that it was the PA who urged the government to go for talks and questioned the government whether they have a proper agenda for talks.

"The normal procedure is an agenda should be prepared at least a month before the talks with vital participation of political, professional, religious and others.

All core issues should be included, but what has taken place here is that even participants do not know what the agenda is," he added.

Chief Organiser to the Opposition and PA MP Mangala Samaraweera said that he hopes the Government will not make it a mere photo session and to pay attention on substantial core issues. But, at the same time, Samaraweera said that the discussions can not be, however, accepted as official government talks since the UNF government is conducting it without a representative from the President. He further said that they are against lifting the LTTE ban before commencement talks and it should have been done, considering the progress of the talks.

He also added that President had written to the Prime Minister reminding certain matters, which should be the subjects of talks in Thailand.

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that they view the talks only as another step of UNF Government's separatism.

"A government which go for talks with any group must have certain standards, but Sri Lanka has no such standards on the matter and proceed for talks as dependents of the LTTE.

The government should have decided their limitations and the criteria before the talks," Dissanayake said.
