No shooting took place at hotel night club, say police

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

The report of the police inquiry into the incident in which a person allegedly had fired a gun shot inside a popular night club at a five star hotel in Colombo will be submitted to the Acting IGP, T. E. Ananadarajah, soon, police sources told the "Sunday Observer".

The police launched a full scale probe into the incident following Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's directive from New York to IGP Anandarajah to investigate the incident and take appropriate action. Police said that no such shooting incident took place inside the night club on September 6, where several foreign cricketers who are currently here for the ICC Championships trophy were also present.

On that day, an argument had ensued between two local businessmen and a body guard of one of them armed with a firearm had accidentally dropped it on the ground causing an alarm. However there wasn't a shooting incident as such and nobody was injured as reported in certain sections of the print media. The incident had taken place around 4.30.a.m., police said.

The DIG, Colombo, Bodi Liyanage instructed the Snr. Supdt. of Colombo Central, Lucky Dissanayake to investigate the matter on the orders of IGP, T.E. Ananadarajah.

A police team subsequently visited the night club but found no spent ammunition at the scene. There was also no damage caused to the premises. At the time of the incident there were about 150 guests including a West Indies and a local cricketer. However, nobody had complained to the police regarding a shooting incident, police said.

The hotel spokesmen when contacted by the "Sunday Observer" said that there wasn't any such incident at the night club as reported in the media.
