Canada welcomes progress

Ottawa, Sept 20 (AFP) - Canada welcomed Friday the successful conclusion of the first round of peace talks between the Sri Lankan government and representatives of the rebel Tamil Tigers. "I have been very impressed with the strides taken over the past eight months to advance the cause of peace in Sri Lanka," said Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham in a statement. "It is encouraging that, after almost 20 years of conflict, both parties are making progress toward resolving their differences through negotiation rather than bloodshed."

Ottawa is prepared to offer further support toward progress by providing technical assistance on the difficult jurisdictional and financial issues under discussion, the statement said.

Graham and Secretary of State for the Asia-Pacific region David Kilgour will meet G. L. Peiris, Sri Lanka's chief negotiator at the peace talks on September 23 in Ottawa.
