A peace initiative : Jak planting in Jaffna

The National Jak Development Project (NJDP) initiated by Lake House, under Silumina Janasetha Programme has caught the attention of the non-governmental agencies throughout the country. The NGO Action Forum, who took up the quest had been able to extend it to the North and East as well.

Jak saplings were the priced gift from South to North, at the NGO Action Forum's recent visit to Jaffna. The Forum, on a peace and exchange mission to Jaffna were instrumental in planting jak saplings at the Kopai Christian College and the Youth Secretariat premises.

The programme was organised by the Forum, in collaboration with Ratnapura Jathika Parisara Govi Jalaya, FORUT, Jaffna Council of Youth Organisations, Jaffna University and Kopai Christian College. Priyantha Kumara, Secretary of the Govi Jayala led the delegation from the South. Hundred jak-saplings were planted at the premises of Kopai Christian College, Youth Secretariat and other areas.

"It was also decided to conduct workshops and seminars on dehydration of jak-fruit and other jak processing methods, in order to further this programme in Jaffna", said Sirimal Karunaratne, Executive Secretary of the Forum.

A seminar on peace and a 'language training' workshop were also held with the participation of the guests of honour, Assistant Govt. Agent, Shivakodi Chelvam, Dr. J. Alwapillai of the Jaffna University and Wesley, Kaushalya and Jenita, members of the LTTE.
