Lankan students at Indian Model UN

Sri Lanka for the first time sent a delegation of 27, student leaders in the age group 15 to 19 years to the 2nd Indian Model United Nations Summit (INMUN). This international youth conference of South Asian student leaders which opened on September 26th in New Delhi with over 1,200 student leaders from India and South Asian countries. "These aspiring delegates are currently in recognized secondary schools and have a firm base of written and spoken English, which is one of the main criteria for selection", said Ananda Rajapakse, Liaison representative in Sri Lanka for INMUN. The Sri Lankan delegation of 21 Girls and 6 Boys from 12 schools will represent and role-play as nationals of 7 UN nations at this summit. They are Norway, Sweden, Spain, Netherlands, Hungary, Nepal and Indonesia.

The Summit is organised for the second consecutive year by Ryan International Schools, the largest chain of International schools operating in India. INMUN 2002 is supported by the UN Information Center in New Delhi, India, stated a media release.

The delegation comprised Inoshini Perera - Representing Norway, Aaysha Carder, Sureka Ahmed and Ishara Wickremasinghe of St. Bridgets Convent. Representing Sweden - Maria Vedanayagam, Shamindri Perera, Rakitha Dias, Uditha Wickremarachchi of Stafford's International School. Representing Spain - Chamindri Wimaladharma of Stafford's International and Ravinath Gamage, Kasun Kodippili, Charana Kanankegamage of D. S. Senanayake College. Representing Netherlands - Nayanthi Perera, Iromi Perera Selyna Peiris and Chamalie Midipolwatte of Royal International School Kurunegala. Representing Hungary - Shari Jayawardena of American National College, Charu Gureja and Yogini Ragunathan of Colombo International School and Dilrini de Silva of Maliyadeva Girls College Kurunegala. Representing Nepal-Sadeepa Gunewardena of Ananda College, Irushi De Mel and Dilu Gamage of Musaeus College, and Dinshani Hettiarachchi of Asian International School. Representing Indonesia - Mariam Abdulla, Nizla Naizer and Zeenath Ishak of Bishops' College. Delegation Manager and Teacher-in-Charge is Ms Rochelle Melder of Asian International School, it further added.
