Bunka awards on Oct. 5

The ninth Bunka awards ceremony of the Japan-Sri Lanka Friendship Cultural Fund will be held at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on October 5 with Minister of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs, Karunasena Kodituwakku as the chief guest.

The Japanese Embassy First Secretary Shinji Nagashima said a special performance will be held by former Bunka awards recipients and a special exhibition of art works by them will also be held at the Harold Peiris Gallery on this day.

Mr. Nagashima said the cultural fund was set up in Sri Lanka in 1993 by the Japanese Association and the Japanese Commerce and Industry Association along with the Embassy of Japan to encourage young persons to develop their creativity in the field of arts etc. He said Japan and Sri Lanka had historical and cultural ties dating back to several centuries.

Professor Kusuma Karaunaratne, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, of the Colombo University said that four persons were nominated for this year's Bunka awards which would be announced on that day. She said several well known personalities in music, art, theatre, dance and literature were presented with special Bunka awards in 1997/1998 for their contribution.

Mr. Eisuke Ishi, Chairman of the Board of Management and Co-Chairperson of the Japan-Sri lanka Friendship Cultural Fund, Dr. P. R. Anthonis of the Japan Sri Lanka Friendship Cultural Fund, and the Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka Seiichiro Otsuka, and Minister Karunasena Kodituwakku are expected to address the ceremony.
