Asian journalists back peace process by Lester Jansz Representatives of Journalists' Unions and senior journalists from the South Asian Region (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) who gathered at a workshop on "Building Union Capacity for Human Rights and Conflict Reporting in South Asia" conducted by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung (FES) unanimously adopted a resolution to support the peace process in Sri Lanka. Representatives of Bhutan and Maldives did not take part in the workshop. The workshop, hosted by the Nepal Press Union and the National Union of Journalists of Nepal was held at the Hotel Himalaya in Kathmandu from September 22 to 24. The journalists expressed the following views: Extend their full support to the peace process, which should end two decades of blood shed in Sri Lanka; This peace process will be an example to other countries of the South Asian Region where bitter battles are waged; Request both the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to move ahead with the peace process overcoming all obstacles in the peace process; |
