British aid for rebuilding war ravaged areas

State Secretary of British International Development Unit, Mrs. Clair Short, has agreed to visit Sri Lanka in December this year. She has also agreed to look into the developmental needs of our country and to support the rebuilding plan of Sri Lanka and to focus the attention of the British government on these matters.

She has expressed her thoughts during her meeting with Minister of Economic Reforms, Science and Technology, Milinda Moragoda, who is on a four-day visit to England.

After participating at initial discussions with the LTTE in Thailand, the Minister arrived in England according to a program set by the government seeking international aid for the rebuilding process of Sri Lanka. Minister Moragoda at this meeting explained about the world conference, the US State Secretary Richard Armitage has decided to organise to collect aid for Sri Lanka and about the Sri Lanka-US double taxation treaty signed between the two countries.

The Minister has stated the need to accelerate the development process of Sri Lanka which was constrained due to the long war in the North-East Provinces as well as the Southern Province. He has also conveyed his thanks on behalf of Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Government of Sri Lanka for the support given by the British Government and Mrs. Clair Short for the peace process. They exchanged ideas regarding the war-trodden areas of Sri Lanka and the living standards of those areas and the immediate developmental requirements of Sri Lanka.

Mrs. Clair Short has stated that the British Government is willing to support Sri Lanka to overcome the disaster brought about by the war and to enter a development process and help achieve success in the world conference aimed at supporting Sri Lanka.

The Minister will participate in a program on privatisation in England at the British Finance and Service Unit. This program will comprise discussions regarding the experiences of the British Government while privatising Insurance, Petroleum, and Port sectors.
