Sri Lanka's oarsmen confident of performing well at Asian Games

Chanaka Talpahewa, a veteran oarsman, is the captain of the Sri Lankan rowing team at the Asian Games 2002. He is confident that the team will perform well at the Games.

According to him, his team consisting of 8 oarsmen; Chanaka Talpahewa (captain), Kushantha Jeerasinghe, Diluk and brother Devanka Aluvihara, sisters Minoli and Mithila Gunawardena, Amaradasa and Shantha from Sri Lanka Navy) are veterans in the field.

This is the first time a Sri Lankan rowing team is participating at Asian Games.

Chanaka who was a ruggerite at Royal College later gave it up and concentrated more on swimming and other water sports.In 1990,his team won at the Eastern Amateur Rowing Competition.

At the annual rowing competitions between Colombo and Madras he was a member of the winning team (for three years they won this competition) and he was also a member of the Sri Lankan team that won the one mile canoe rowing title for three years.

He is also the Secretary of the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka.

Chanaka has a MSc in Management Studies from the University of Colombo and at present he is working as Assistant Secretary, International Affairs at Prime Minister's Office.
