A motor rally for the average motorist

A motor rally has been organised by the Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC) to be worked off on 5th of October. It provides an excellent opportunity for any motorist who would like to participate in a motor sports competition without having to do any special preparation of the vehicle or needing any special driving skills. Organised as a "time and distance" rally, it is geared towards people who would want to use their daily transport type vehicle for the event.

The rally will take in day-time as well as night-time driving and starts at 3.00 p.m. from Galle Face Hotel. Competitors are required to be present at the start by 1.30 p.m. on the day of the event. The time and distance charts will be available for the drivers on the day at 9.00 a.m. Vehicles will leave the start at two minute intervals. The rally is expected to finish at Sinbad Hotel, Kalutara.

In this type of rally, the route instructions are not given to competitors until the day of the event. The compulsory co-driver has to calculate average speeds for each section of the rally according to the time and the distances given on the instructions, and advice the driver as to the optimum speeds to be maintained as well as the actual route to be taken. There will be several check points along the way. Arrival at a check point early would attract debit points at the rate of 5 for every minute. On the other hand, arrival at check points late would attract debit points at the rate of 10 for every minute. The winners would be decided by calculating as to who would have the least amount of debit points on arrival at the finish.

With the CMSC's wealth of experience in organising events such as these, competitors could be assured of a well organised rally that would above all be a fun event to participate in. It is also noteworthy that officials who plot such rallies are always mindful of the fact that these rallies are run on public roads and hence the plotting is done so that competitors need not break speed limits or disobey any road rules.

Three categories of vehicles will be eligible for participation in this event. They are: Category 'A' - 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive cars (but specifically excludes vans and 4 WD turbo charged cars)

Category 'B' - 4 WD jeeps/Double Cabs
Category 'C' - Motorcycles

The entry fees include rally participation, dinner, accommodation and breakfast at Hotel Sinbad. The prize distribution will take place on the 6th October at Hotel Sinbad. Entry fees are Rs. 2,500 per CMSC member and Rs. 3,500 per non member. Closing date for entries is the 3rd October 2002. Entry forms are available at the CMSC office, c/o Jinasenas, No. 4, Hunupitiya Road, Colombo 2. The Club has decided that only the first 40 entries will be accepted.
