Int'l jeweller to dazzle Sri Lanka Giovanni Bulgari, a representative of Bvlgari Spa, considered one of the three largest jewellers in the world, and his chief buyer, Sylvestry will visit Sri Lanka this week. Bulgari is one of the largest and regular buyers of Sri Lankan stones, specially sapphires. Bvlgari is rated among the top jewellers in the world along with Tiffany and Cartier and today has 155 stores throughout the world. The visit is arranged by the Export Development Board (EDB) which hopes to promote Sri Lanka as a destination for sapphires. "We like to cut, polish and mount them in jewellery as this will be value addition," said a senior official of the EDB. Therefore, Mr Bulgari's visit will boost Sri Lanka's image as well as strengthen the gem and jewellery sector, the official added.Bulgari is scheduled to meet Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion Professor G.L. Peiris, EDB officials and representatives of the gem and jewellery sector. He is also scheduled to visit gem mines in Ratnapura to get first-hand experience in the gem industry. Bulgari descends from an ancient family of Greek silversmiths, where Sotiro Bulgari, the founder of the business, made precious objects from silver. He emigrated and opened his first shop in Sistina, Rome in 1884. In 1905, with the help of his sons, he inaugurated the shop in via Condotti, which continues to be Bvlgari's flagship store.The company's turnover amounted to Euro 766 million in 2001. |
