Orders worth US$ 100,000 clinched at Tokyo fair The Sri Lanka Trade Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan had clinched on-the-spot orders worth US$ 100,000, according to the Export Development Board (EDB). The coir and information technology sectors recorded the biggest success at the exhibition concluded recently, according to an EDB news release. The exhibition was organised by the EDB, Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan as part of the activities to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The island has had a good market for tawashi brushes in Japan since 1980. More orders were obtained at the event for coir pots, coir dust, husk chips and coir nets. These products are required for plant nurseries and landscaping. According to a coir exporter who took part in the event, opening of the Japanese market for new coir products may be an opportunity for Sri Lanka to cover up the losses from the drop in exports to the USA. The IT and software exporters who took part in the exhibition also attracted the attention of Japanese business people. As costs are rising in India and China, Japanese companies are looking for low cost opportunities for outsourcing and such an opportunity could be used by Sri Lanka, the release said. A new product which caught the eye of the Japanese was 100 per cent environmental friendly deodoriser made of activated carbon. The decayed product can be used as a fertiliser. The product holds patent rights in the Japanese market and a sample order for 1000 pieces had been executed through the producer's agent. Toys, herbal products, tea and herbal teas, rubber products, automotive parts and gems and jewellery also attracted attention. Twenty nine companies which had the potential to enter or expand in the Japanese market were selected to take part in the exhibition along with two institutions. It was visited by nearly 1000 people, the EDB said. The other activities conducted to celebrate 50 years of relations were the Gem and Jewellery Show organised by the EDB which was accompanied by a fashion show organised by Yoland Aluwihare; three performances on a beeralu lace weaver, mask carver and traditional gem cutter; a special tea service organised by the Sri Lanka Tea Board; investment seminars sponsored by the Board of Investment; and a food and cultural show. Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion and Constitutional Affairs Prof G.L. Peiris and Minister of Tourism Gamini Lokuge were present at the events. SriLankan Airlines, Hotel Hilton Tokyo, Ministry of Tourism and Ceylon Tourist Board were involved in the promotional campaigns. |
