ICT the focus of INFOTEL 2002

INFOTEL 2002, the exhibition showcasing the latest information and communications technologies, opened on October 9 and will conclude today (13) at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre, Colombo.

The theme of this year's INFOTEL conference and exhibition is 'Envisioning an e-nation'. It has been declared a national event by the Government in view of its importance. INFOTEL 2002 focuses the local and foreign attention on Sri Lanka's potential as a centre for the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry and professionals.

"It also highlights the need to use ICT to improve the performance and efficiency of everything we do as a nation," said Executive Director of Infotel Lanka Society and Chairman Main Organising Committee David Dominic. Sixty three exhibitors are displaying modern hardware and software products and services covering computer, communications, multi-media and Internet technologies in 183 stalls. Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ravi Karunanayake and Chancellor University of Moratuwa Dr Arthur C. Clarke opened the exhibition.

The exhibition was a brainchild of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe when he was the Minister of Industries, Science and Technology. The first exhibition was held in 1992 and was followed with exhibitions in 1994, 1997, 1998 and 2000.

The Prime Minister, in his message to INFOTEL, has stated that the theme is in keeping with the Government's vision of using ICT to drive the nation forward and bring faster socio-economic relief to the nation.
